Madison and Ethan had both recently come out of long-term relationships, each navigating that weird period of starting over. Madison was travel nursing at the time and had come back to Jacksonville for the weekend. She went to her friend Cassidy’s apartment pool, and as the two of them sat there talking, Madison laughed as she told Cassidy she was sure she would never meet anyone in Jacksonville and would be single forever.

Just a few minutes later, Ethan arrived.

Ethan, being from Minnesota, had never tried a Publix sub and had been out golfing with mutual friends earlier that day. On the way to the pool, he decided it was finally time to experience his first pub sub. He and his friends walked in with their sandwiches in hand, ready for a laid-back afternoon.

Ethan took his first bite and then he saw Madison.

The sub never stood a chance. He forgot all about it. Madison noticed him at the same moment, and everything she had just said to Cassidy suddenly felt way too ironic.
